DR CB5 Concrete Bench, Open Top Supports

DR CB5 Concrete Bench with two open top supports is a full concrete version of DR CBT3 bench with teak logs. Although the default length of this bench is 7', it can be customized to perfectly fit into any exterior or interior spaces. Available in any combination of natural gray, charcoal, and/or white concrete.

All concrete surfaces are sealed with high-performance sealer available in semi-gloss or matte finish. The sealer provides an excellent stain and acid protection, as well as scratch resistance of concrete.

The 84" long x 18" wide (sitting slab) suspended concrete bench weighs approximately 600 lbs.

Both supports are  6" wide x 25" deep x 21.5" tall

It is critical to assemble this concrete bench on a flat and leveled surface for the elements to properly align and maintain its appeal.

We recommend help of at least two people when opening the crate and moving this bench at your location.  Also a utility/hand truck or dolly would be extremely helpful. Pushing or pulling concrete bench resting on any surfaces could result in damage to the supports and floor surface itself. No attempts should be made to move this bench once assembled.

DR CB5 Concrete Bench, Open top supports will be delivered inside a crate.

This time I was presented with a two-tables design challenge.  A boardroom table and a coffee / lobby sitting area table for NAC, North America Construction (1993) Ltd. and NAC Constructors Ltd (1996) based in Canada. It seams like that's my country of choice for large concrete and steel table designs, of course thanks to Hammertown Industrial Furniture in Canada . They  already started on this project so hopefully I'll be able to present the real pictures of those two finished tables.

Boardroom table’s top frame (5'x9') consists of 2.5″x 2.5″ steel angle, and 1"x1" tubing. The entire frame will be filled with one inch thick concrete slab, and its center section will have a large 1/4" thick steel plate embedded into it. A square cutout in the plate's center will contain NAC's logo.

An entire top sits on a massive concrete and steel column welded to a steel plate.

The 40"x50" coffee table's front concrete leg displays NAC's logo and name, it also provides partial support for the concrete and steel top. Two additional legs in opposite corners and a steel shelf complete this design. Can't wait to see the real thing.

Please let me know if you'd like to make a statement with a unique piece of furniture custom designed and handcrafted for your company.

Another boardroom table design I finished recently, this time for the Hamilton District Christian High School in Hamilton, Ontario, CA.  The table is currently being handcrafted by Drew Neven & Steven Voortman from the Hammertown Industrial Furniture in Canada. I call it a "Happy Table", don't you think it looks HAPPY?

Boardroom table’s top frame consists of 2″x 2″ steel angle, and 1"x1" tubing. It is divided into several sections made of concrete, steel and wooden planks. HDCH's logo will be laser cut from a steel plate (part of the top surface), powder coated and re-inserted into the same plate.  Logo's rectangular element projections extending to the floor become the supporting column under one side of this table.

The two wooden planks further dividing table's top on its opposite end rest on top of wooden columns / legs. All the remaining spaces in the frame will be filled with concrete.

Actual table pictures will be posted as soon as they are available.

Please let me know if you'd like to make a statement with a unique conference room table custom designed and handcrafted for your company.

This is my fifth conference room table design, and a first local fabrication. It was partially done in my studio and by Weltz Custom Metal Designs, a couple of artisans specializing in blacksmithing  and welding.

An entire top of this 16 feet long and 6 feet wide table is made out of 5 concrete slabs set inside steel frames. The two outside sections have curved steel frame corners and the center concrete slab has a company logo embedded into it.

The conference table's leg profiles have been laser cut out of 3/16" thick steel sheets and welded into a 6" thick supports. All metal components are powder coated to flat black color.

There are electrical outlet receptacles and dual USB charging ports installed in each of the legs / under the table's top. Media ports are hidden inside the two large legs and accessible from the top / behind the two access panels.

Please let me know if you'd like to make a statement with a unique concrete conference room table custom designed and handcrafted for your company.

DR CBT3 Concrete Pedestals and Teak Top Bench

DR CBT3 Concrete Pedestals and Teak Top Bench has five 3" wide and 6" tall solid teak logs supported on two, open top concrete pedestals. Concrete and teak are jointed together with stainless steel hardware powder coated to match concrete color. The length and width can be customized for a perfect fit into your landscape, office space, or home.

Solid teak logs are sealed with 4 coats of clear teak oil, all concrete surfaces are sealed with at 4-5 coats  of high-performance sealer available in semi-gloss or matte finish. The sealer is a penetrable type and provides an excellent stain, acid, and scratch resistance of concrete surfaces.

The 72" concrete pedestals and teak top bench weighs approximately 300 lbs .

It is critical to assemble this concrete bench on a flat and leveled surface for the blocks to properly align and maintain its appeal.

We recommend help of at least two people when opening the crate and moving this bench at your location.  Also a utility/hand truck or dolly would be extremely helpful. Pushing or pulling concrete bench resting on any surfaces could result in damage to the columns and floor surface itself. No attempts should be made to move this bench once assembled.

DR CBT3 Concrete Pedestals and Teak Top Bench will be delivered inside a crate.

DR CBU Contemporary Concrete Buffet & Console Table

DR CBU Contemporary Concrete Buffet has a 2" thick slab supported on two pedestals at its short ends. It was inspired by my concrete bench, but this one is just slightly taller. The concrete slab, because of a 80" span, has post tension rods running along the edges.

All concrete surfaces are sealed with 4 coats of high-performance sealer available in semi-gloss or matte finish. The sealer is a penetrable type and provides an excellent stain, acid, and scratch resistance of concrete surfaces.

The entire concrete buffet in listed below dimensions weighs approximately 850 lbs with its weight distributed between 3 elements:

  1. Concrete buffet slab 18" deep x 2" thick x 94" long ~ 200 lbs

  2. Two 14" x 14" x 39" supporting pedestals (partially hollow) - 2 x 325 lbs

It is critical to assemble this concrete buffet on a flat and leveled surface for the two pedestals to properly support the slab and maintain its appeal.

We recommend help of at least three people capable of lifting over 300 lbs when opening the crate and moving this buffet at your location.  Also a utility/hand truck or dolly capable of supporting weights listed above would be extremely helpful. Pushing or pulling concrete buffet columns resting on any surfaces could result in damage to the columns and floor surface itself.

DR CBU concrete buffet will be delivered inside a crate.

Hello! Today I'll show you how to age a flower pot! So it looks like that gorgeous, old and 'mealy', as I usually like to call it. For this, I have chosen five diffrent earth colors, I have Autentico chalk paint on all of them, It's Nearly Black, Then we have a color that is a bit gray-beige called Reindeer a green named Racing Green, we have a gray - Cement and a white - Ivory. Then I have brushes, and I

also have theese that I've cut down, ordinary sponges that I will use to 'Dab' the color with. But the very first thing that I will do, is to paint this pot with...

Video Transcript

Hello, how are you doing? I am Julian and this is my very first YouTube video and my new YouTube Channel 1989go. Here we go. As you have seen in the beginning, it is about how to make a bowl of concrete. All the materials and all the tools you need are listed below in the video description. Here you can see how I started to mix

the first load of concrete. I have some water in the bucket and then add more and more of the concrete. Important is that the concrete is neither too damp nor too dry, but you can also read in the description on the packaging how much water you can do. The f...

Differences Between Lightweight Concrete and Normal Weight Concrete

Have you ever wondered how to make light weight concrete? This video explains the differences between the two.

Video Transcript

This is Jason Spangler with Wagner Meters and today I'd like to talk to you about a couple of subjects, one of them being some other questions I get revolving around the differences between lightweight concrete and normal weight concrete. Obviously, one of them is the actual way to the concrete. A normal weight concrete is going to be about 140 to 150 pounds per cubic foot where a lightweight

concrete is going to be about 90-115 pounds per cubic foot. Now, the key thing about that is that...

A really cool video explaining how to make a custom volume control knob with light using concrete.

In this video we'll be building a stylish desktop volume knob, which, besides looking really cool, allows you to finely control the loudness of your music in a tactile way. As you can see, the knob itself is made out of concrete, so feels pretty solid. The design is also completely customisable, so you can match it to your desk setup. Here for example I used plexiglass

for the base, and added an LED to give it a ring glow, which looks really cool. If you do customise yours and want to share your results with others, then ...

Making concrete more sustainable by using fabric

Using fabric to form concrete and create interesting structures

Video Transcript

We've always been interested in how to make the best use of materials... Concrete is particularly interesting because it's a bit misunderstood in that most people's experience is of this grey, massive, em, cold, aggressive material. Our view is that that's a consequence of the process of making it. If you understand in detail how to make concrete, you can make it quite differently. Using textiles as formwork... it

is quite counter-intutitive because we're using a relatively flimsy material to deal with a heavy, quite harsh material. The fabric actually ...

Hello, I'm Darek @ Designs by Rudy / Chicago concrete furniture design studio

Darek Creating unorthodox and practical things was always on my agenda, however, designing concrete furniture became the most enjoyable and challenging experience so far. They are not your everyday pieces of furniture; made mostly with glass fiber reinforced concrete, some are quite heavy when put together, but… every single one of them is always one hundred percent unique.
It is virtually impossible to make any two of them the same, they may appear similar, but when you take a closer look, they are completely different species.
If you are looking for a very unique piece of concrete furniture to complement your office, house, or backyard, a design that nobody else can and will ever have, give me a call or complete the form below.

How concrete furniture evolved over the the last 100 years...

Creating household concrete furniture was first introduced in the early 1900s. This new concept, however, has not gained popular support among the general public as concrete was then viewed as ugly and unappealing. Moreover, the use of concrete has only been associated with the construction of roads and bridges and was thought to be an unlikely material for the creation of furniture and other household fixtures. At that time, even the use of concrete in building houses were deemed to be unattractive and impractical. Advocates of the new concept were also unable to prove the reliability of the material and its many uses.

It took several decades before advocates of the use of concrete in building houses and creating concrete furniture were able to develop mechanisms as well as equipment that will allow concrete to be used for creating highly durable and resilient concrete products. When these methods were developed, the usual rough and stiff material has been transformed into a more pliable and soft substance that is capable of being designed and molded into various forms and sizes.

First types of concrete furniture designs

Concrete tables are among the first forms of concrete furniture that were created. These tables are created for their functionality and for style. Early forms of concrete tables only featured giant slabs of rectangular concrete. Recent innovations however has allowed concrete to be shape and molded, creating various forms and sizes. It has also become a lot more soft and fluid as opposed to the usual rough and stiff structure of concrete tables.

Applications

These types of concrete furniture are great for both indoor and outdoor areas. Concrete table looks great when used for outdoor dining. It easily blends well with all the natural elements. It is also highly durable and capable of resisting all types of weather. It is able to endure the high temperatures of direct sun as well as extreme cold. It also does not get damaged even when exposed to rain and hail. Thus, for outdoor settings, one is able to avoid the inconvenience and the trouble of having to drag outdoor tables when sudden weather changes occur.

Concrete furniture generally blend well with other themes and decorative implements. Thus, it is also used for indoor dining and decorating purposes. Concrete dining tables are sturdy and are easy to clean and sanitize. It is, moreover, a great conversation starter when there are guests in the house. Since modern concrete tables can come in different shapes and forms, smaller ones with interesting designs can be used as side or coffee tables, or they may be used as concrete console tables and become part of the decorative items in the house.

Commercial use of concrete furniture

Concrete furniture also make a great addition to the décor of businesses and offices. They are usually utilized as conference tables, waiting tables for reception areas and display tables for certain businesses. Businesses sometimes purchase customized concrete tables to create a more unique look or to complement the existing design scheme that they have. Most businesses employ a sleek industrial look for their offices and having concrete tables greatly accentuate that theme.

Restaurants and cafes, especially those which follow a more modern and relaxed theme, will also find the use of concrete furniture to be highly advantageous. First, they get value for their money. These tables are extremely durable so they are made to last even when used on a daily basis. Second, it is a great decorative piece of furniture. It is able to combine aesthetic appeal and sheer functionality. It can also be transformed into a stunning centerpiece and buffet area. Its uses are endless and its charm is limitless.

These tables also work well with cafes and diners which offer al fresco dining. Concrete blends well with other outdoor elements and it serves as a striking invitation to passersby who will most likely be intrigued by the decorative effect of concrete tables. Moreover, care and maintenance is relatively easy since concrete tables are virtually indestructible and requires minimal upkeep.

As mentioned earlier, concrete tables are highly suitable for outdoor dining because it is able to withstand various temperatures and changes in weather. This makes it highly cost-efficient and versatile, and business managers will not have to go through the hassle of frequently replacing broken furniture.

There are two kinds of concrete furniture available in the market today. The first one is precast concrete furniture. These pieces are mass produced from a single mold. They can usually be purchased at a much lower price than its counterparts and are readily available to the buyers depending on the availability of stocks.

The other type of concrete furniture is the customized one. Customized concrete tables are made according to the wishes and specifications of the buyer. They are unique, one-of-a-kind products that are only sold to the one who ordered them. One advantage of having customized tables is that it can be highly personalized, where personal insignia or markings are placed depending on the buyer’s preferences. These kinds of tables, however, are generally more expensive and take a longer time to be finished and delivered.

Concrete furniture designs

Modern concrete furniture designs are quite versatile and they come in various shapes, sizes and functions.  It is now common to see concrete kitchen countertops and sinks.  Recent additions to these kitchen novelties are concrete cabinets, dining tables and chairs, which may be customized based on the form, size and color preferences of the user.

Concrete countertops may either be precast, where it is casted off site based on the template chosen by the client, or site casted where it is poured, cured and finished right on top of the kitchen cabinets.  A lot of people are now interested in transitioning to concrete countertops because of its tried and tested durability.  It is also easy to customize because it is handcrafted.

Therefore, certain details that the client wishes to incorporate into the design may easily be added before it is cast and cured.  Moreover, due to the latest innovations, concrete materials may now be stained, coated and infused with certain additives to attain a more customized design.

Dining tables and chairs, coffee tables, bar stools, and other seating implements are also common concrete furniture designs.  These designs range from the block-like structures usually associated with concrete furniture to the soft and fluid look of more contemporary designs.  Furniture designers have also now ventured into making rocking chairs and several decorative pieces like statues, decorative panels for walls, home ornaments, planters, and even drinking fountains.

Concrete furniture designs are also now easily customized according to the color preference of the client.  Coloring concrete pieces can be done in several ways with varying results.  One process is done with the use of an internal pigment.  This is a colored powder which is mixed into the wet concrete and allowed to set with the entire fixture.  This process completely and permanently colors the entire concrete panel.  This process is also more predictable in the sense that the client is able to choose the exact color outcome of the process.

Another process of coloring concrete projects is acid staining.  This process involves infusing metallic salts on the hardened concrete and allowing it to react with the material.  This also results to a permanent color but the exact outcome may vary per project.  Putting dye on the concrete slab is another coloring process that may be used.  The dye is applied to cured slabs.  This process only allows color to penetrate the top layer of the concrete.  The designer may create various patterns with the dye but there are limited color choices and some dyes may not be suitable for concrete surfaces.

Maintenance of furniture made of concrete

Maintaining the quality of concrete furniture depends greatly on the kind of concrete used and the additives that are applied to the design.  It is important to note that while concrete is durable and practically indestructible, some additives, colors and sealants are not.  Many of these materials may show signs of wear and eventually alter the overall appearance of the furniture.  Thus, it is best to be well-informed of these possibilities before using them.

Interior home decorating has never been the same with the emergence of a wide array of options for concrete furniture design.  The possibilities are truly endless, limited only by the imagination of the concrete furniture designer.
